One of the first diamond wedding band was the one given to Marie of Burgundy on the occasion of her marriage to Archduke Maximilian I of Austria in 1477. It was not till over 50 years after in the reign of Henry VIII of Britain that diamond cutting had reached a level that was OK for jewelry like diamond earrings. If you had been purchasing diamonds back then, you'd have been disappointed ; those early cuts didn't show the sort of brilliance that we see in fine diamond jewellery today.
It was not till the 1800s that art of diamond cutting had reached a quantity of refinement that authorized the gem's real beauty to polish thru the way it does in modern diamond jewellery.
